The largest Square in the world: Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is the heart of Beijing, a place of tourists walking. Tiananmen Square can hold about one million people.

Previously, the square was a courtyard in front of the main gate to the Forbidden City, where used to be the office of ministries. At that time, it had an area of about 110,000 square meters. After falling of the feudal system, and especially after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, the area have updated and expanded. Now length is 880 meters and width is 500 meters and covers an area of 440,000 square meters.


Around Tiananmen Square – The museum Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution and also the building of the local parliament – the National People’s Congress, which you also can visiting.

In the center of square constructed the mausoleum of Mao Zedong. In memory of this great man in November 1976 is started the construction of the mausoleum (Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall) which was completed in August next year. The mausoleum was built during a year by teams of volunteers. The official opening was on September 9, 1977 the first anniversary of the death of Mao.


The next point of interest of Tiananmen Square – Monument to People’s Heroes. This monument is dedicated to the men and women who lost their lives in the struggle for the independence of China.

Tiananmen Square is named in honor of the gate – Gate of Heavenly Peace. Gate of Heavenly Peace was a place of important ceremonies and have witnessed many important events in modern Chinese history.


On the West from the Gate of Heavenly Peace is situated Zhongshan Park. About thousand years ago on the site of this park was the Temple of National Revival.
